Poster setting out details of Douglas church services to mark the coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra
Date(s): 1902
Creator(s): unknown
Scope & Content: The coronation was to have taken place on Thursday 26 June 1902. Everything was set up and the celebrations were ready to begin but they and the coronation were postponed after Edward VII became seriously ill. Suffering from appendicitis and later peritonitis, the king needed an emergency life saving operation. The public knew that he was seriously unwell without knowing the details. The coronation was rescheduled and went ahead on Saturday 9 August 1902.
Despite the delay, there were still many celebrations across the island. In Peel High Bailiff Laughton and his wife planted an oak tree outside the courthouse. In his speech delivered at Peel Castle Mr Laughton compared Great Britain to the Roman Empire and claimed that Great Britain was more powerful.
