Administration / Biographical History: The Royal Cinema began its life as an ice-skating rink which opened in 1924. In 1930 it was converted into a cinema named the 'Cosy Cinema' operated by Ramsey Amusements Ltd. The Cosy Cinema closed in 1959.
The building was then acquired by Neston Cinema Ltd, and reopened as the Royal Cinema. The first films to be screened at this cinema were 'Doctor No' starring Sean Connery and 'Girls! Girls! Girls!' starring Elvis Presley. Unfortunately this cinema did not last long and in June 1964 it closed its door for good. In the same month, Castletown Thermostats Ltd acquired the building. Developing into Strix Ltd in the 1980s (a major employer on island) the firm moved to new headquarters at Ronaldsway in July 1993; the former cinema was demolished in August of that year. Housing has since been built on the old cinema site.
