John Speed's Map of the Isle of Man

Scope & Content: An engraving depicting the Island and surrounding countries. Towns and villages and most parishes are named, as are landmarks and main rivers. The main towns and estuaries of the other countries are named also. Side panels contain information about the Island. Two scales are marked out (see notes) but no descriptions of the actual scales are given. The scale at bottom left 'Conteyneth the Miles of the Island it selfe, and is to be measured according to the usual manner'. The scale at bottom right 'is to be measured from the Compasse in the midst of the Island unto the bordring Coasts of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales'.
