Scope & Content: Correspondence and accompanying papers received by the 2nd Duke of Atholl and other individuals in his service, both on and off the Isle of Man, on a wide variety of topics; the majority of the letters received have been sent by his Governors (James Murray, Patrick Lindesay, Basil Cochrane and John Wood), but there are also letters from various Manx civil and judicial officers; also present are letters from the Duke's Commissioners of the Appeals (William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield; and Edmund Hoskins) and their Registrars of Appeals (Alexander Ross and Hugh Hamersley), who oversaw appeals from the island in London, along with correspondence from a number of other legal professionals, including James Makon and John Sharpe, who represented the Duke's interests in a variety of causes; there are also originals and copies/drafts of letters sent by the Duke and his steward, Humphrey Harrison.
