Letter from Governor Patrick Lindesay, Castletown to James Murray, 2nd Duke of Atholl

Date(s): 30 Oct 1745

Creator(s): Lindesay, Patrick

Scope & Content: A manuscript letter from Governor Lindesay, informing the Duke of Atholl that he is filled with 'sensible joy' from the news given by Humphrey Harrison [presumably at the Duke being safe] after many uncertain reports, and goes on to state that he hopes the [Jacobite] rebellion is soon over; further on the rebellion, Lindesay gives details of his actions following news of the insurrection, which involved calling up the militia, though it was poorly armed; he then covers a number of topics raised by Harrison when he arrived on the Isle of Man [see the memorandum, MS 09707/2/105], including the raising of £12,000 on the island on security of the customs [possibly to pay off the loan given to the Duke by General George Wade], which would not be possibe due to various circumstances; and accommodation for His Grace, should he come to live on the isle.

Part of a numbered series of letters from Lindesay to the Duke; No. 2.
