Letter from Governor Patrick Lindesay, Castletown to James Murray, 2nd Duke of Atholl

Date(s): 7 Aug 1747

Creator(s): Lindesay, Patrick

Scope & Content: A manuscript letter from Governor Lindesay, informing the Duke of Atholl that a 'malicious' informer from the Isle of Man has reported to English Customs that a cargo of tobacco was due to land on the island, on its way to Camvere [Cumbrae?], which has led to the debenture on the cargo being removed and prosecution intended against the proprietor; the ship with the cargo has been sent on to the port it was intended to arrive at to obtain a certificate as proof of landing there, which in turn means the Duke will lose out on duty from the vessel landing at the island; Lindesay moves on to suggest that rent for the Calf of Man should be demanded from the person working on behalf of the lessee [John Humfrey, also Humphrey/Humphreys], and if not, legal action taken; Lindesay concludes the letter with news on activities at the Glenchass mine.

Part of a numbered series of letters from Lindesay to the Duke; No. 2.
