Letter from Governor Patrick Lindesay, Castletown to James Murray, 2nd Duke of Atholl

Date(s): 5 Feb 1747/8

Creator(s): Lindesay, Patrick

Scope & Content: A manuscript letter from Governor Lindesay, informing the Duke of Atholl that a trial was undertaken to see how many men would be willing to enlist in the proposed regiment for the Prince of Orange, but none were found; he goes on to state that the 'better sort of people' on the island complain about the scarcity of labouring men and servants, and that men of the lower class have an 'aversion to being land soldiers, but are fond of the sea,' and that much of the agricultural work is undertaken by women; Lindesay also reports that things are not looking well at the Glenchass mine, though it is being worked day and night.
