Letter from John Quayle, Isle of Man to James Murray, 2nd Duke of Atholl
Date(s): 25 Sep 1750
Creator(s): Quayle, John
Scope & Content: A manuscript letter from the Comptroller, John Quayle [the Elder], informing the Duke of Atholl that he asked Bishop Wilson to provide funds to support the clergy's case against the Earl of Derby, but he pleaded poverty, saying he was not 'worth above' £1000 'in the world;' however, the Bishop has agreed to call the clergy together for consultation and to help them so far as he can; Quayle then moves on to the subject of Alice Stevenson's petition [MS 09707/2/295] for the rents of the Balladoole estate to be sequestrated, which he advises against; Quayle also mentions that herring fishing has been poor, and more tea has landed this year than the previous one.
