Date(s): 14 Jan 1755

Creator(s): Cochrane, Basil

Scope & Content: A manuscript letter from Governor Cochrane, informing the Duke of Atholl that two ships, one from Jamaica and the other from Virginia, docked at Ramsey, but instead of entering their cargoes on the island, they gained permission from the Commissioners of the Customs to carry on to England; Cochrane goes on to report that the Isle of Man is in need of a surgeon, and to that end, a subscription has been made for £60, and he has written to a Mr. Gillespie, who 'by all accounts is fully qualifyed' for the post; the letter concludes with Cochrane informing the Duke that the Bishop 'still holds out,' though he is 'reduced to be a child' in memory and judgement, and Cochrane has been enquiring into the manner in which a new bishop is presented.
