Scope & Content: Manuscript copies of four letters: the first, original dated 12 April 1755, is from the Duke of Atholl to Governor Cochrane, informing the latter that Mark Hildesley has been nominated to the Bishopric of Sodor and Man, who he believes is a 'worthy man,' before moving on to the topic of Mr Atherton, who is to replace [John] Sanforth as the Duke's agent in Liverpool; in the same letter, the Duke mentions the Balladoole case [between Alice Stevenson and Colonel Stevenson] and his approbation of Cochrane's suggestions for candidates to several officials' posts [see MS 09707/2/475]; the second letter, original dated 9 June 1755, is from the Duke to Cochrane, and covers bills he has received and the Balladoole case; the third letter, original dated 10 July 1755, is from Humphrey Harrison to James Makon, informing the latter that Harrison showed the Duke his letter and petition, who has subsequently signed a reference on the back of the petition; the final letter, original dated 10 August 1755, is from the Duke to Cochrane, which gives condolences on the death of [John Quayle the Elder], and the news that Major [Humphrey] Harrison will collect whatever money is in the treasury or whatever can be collected together.
