Scope & Content: A manuscript copy of a petition submitted by Thomas Moore and Hugh Cosnahan, on behalf of the House of Keys and the inhabitants of the Isle of Man, in response to the proposed Bill, entitled, 'A Bill for the more effectually preventing the mischiefs arising to the revenue and commerce of Great Britain and Ireland from the illicit and clandestine trade to and from the Isle of Man' [also known as the 'Mischief Act of 1765']; the petitioners state the Bill in question will destroy the island's foreign trade, which is its 'chief subsistence,' and that the isle's trade can be regulated without the restrictions outlined in the Bill; if the proposed law passes, the petitioners request the Manx people receive compensation.
