'A biographical sketch of my parents' lives: a personal reconstruction'

Date(s): 1980

Creator(s): Hindmarsh, Roland; Bryant, Viviane

Scope & Content: Detailed handwritten overview of the lives of Harold Hindmarsh and his Belgian wife Aline (nee van de Pitte) written by his son Roland (known within the family as Jock) with copious supplementary comments and corrections by Roland's sister Viviane in 1981-1982.

The manuscript spans the lives of both parents and into widowhood (Harold died in 1950 aged 61) and includes the family's time on the Isle of Man, where Harold, a Captain in the Intelligence Corps, was posted to work in Metropole Internment Camp, Douglas in spring 1940. Roland recounts the initial family separation and Viviane recalls that they set up home at 6 The Esplanade, Douglas. Observations are recorded about both family circumstances and the intelligence work conducted by their father and his sentiments. In 1942 Harold was posted to another internment camp in London and the family relocated. The children Jock and Viviane visited the Island but were away at university during this period.
