'To what extent was Methodism a contributory factor in the decline of the Manx language?'

Date(s): 2022

Creator(s): Westwood, Rose

Scope & Content: Illustrated essay with bibliography completed during a sabbatical by the author from her role as Methodist Minister in the West Oxfordshire Circuit. The author considers whether John Wesley's written words to George Holder (Chief Assistant in Mann) in 1789 had any impact on the eradication of the Manx language. Wesley wrote, 'Dear George, - I exceedingly disapprove of publishing anything in the Manx language. On the contrary, we should do everything in our power to abolish it from the earth - ... This would be much hindered by providing them (Manx Wesleyans) with hymns in their own tongue. Therefore, gently and quietly, let the proposal drop'.

To investigate, she considers Manx in print, opposition, the arrival of Methodism, Methodist preaching plans, teaching in the Sunday School, the local preachers, conference record and Manx language hymn books. Lastly she notes a dedication stone in Manx dated 1864 built into a Peel Primitive Methodist Circuit chapel in Glen Maye erected in 1878. Before drawing her own conclusions she notes stronger opposition and antagonism to the Manx language at work, the impact of the Revestment Act (1765) and of tourism.
