'Jewish Refugees not wanted. Why? Reflections on internment in the 1940s'
Date(s): June-July 2022
Creator(s): David, Miriam E.
Scope & Content: The author explains that her title is taken from a diary entry written by her mother, 'Jewish refugees not wanted'. On that day (20 June 1940) the fiance of Esther Leah/Lilian David (nee Lea) had been dismissed from his job in Manchester and was shortly to be interned in Huyton and Mooragh camps. The author reflects on the impact of reading the diary and correspondence and learning more of the wartime experiences of her parents, Esther and Curt Ludwig David. She traces how her father came to be in England and uses the documentation to narrate the sequence of events including campaigning for his release which came in early March 1941.
