Scope & Content: A manuscript exhortation addressed to the Governor and the Council on the Isle of Man, declaring that he cannot see a 'happy settlement' on the island until he has 'taken care that the honour of God be secured by incouraging religion and virtue and by discountenancing all such vices and immoralityes as are a scandel to all Christianity and a weight under w[hi]ch no people can thrive and prosper long;' to this end, the Earl requires all those who are employed by him on the island to 'live soberly;' he also requires the Bishop and clergy to warn their parishioners that the 'wrath of God is most near a people when they sin without fear and without restraint;' noted on the document is a declaration from a Court of Tynwald, stating that this exhortation will be read out in the parish churches.
