'Kirby, Braddan, Isle of Man: A Manx Mansion & its Families'
Date(s): December 1982
Creator(s): Kenyon, John Stowell
Scope & Content: Typescript account dedicated with thanks to Mrs Dorothy Drinkwater, a friend of the author for many years. The writer sets out to tell the story of Kirby over the past 165 years writing, 'This is the story of a Manx Empire builder and also of an eminent Liverpool family whose Manx descent on the maternal side brought them to Kirby, there to play a prominent role in Island life'.
The article is arranged by prologue and time period finishing with the generation of Collingwood Peter Drinkwater ('Col') and his wife Dorothy, both of whom were active in the creation of the Friends of the Manx Museum in 1938 and in the growth of that society. Kenyon, himself Chairman of the Friends of the Manx Museum, concludes, 'Kirby stands on the borders of a town anxious to extend its boundaries. Recently newspapers indulged in flights of fancy about the creation of a short circuit motor cycle race track on Port-e-Chee. We must hope that Mrs Drinkwater and her son will be able to preserve their heritage and that the Kirby that Colonel Wilks and Sir George created will enter upon its third century of existence unspoiled.'
