'History of my parents Kaethe & Georg Schwarzloh'

Date(s): 29 July 2019

Creator(s): Thomas, Carin

Scope & Content: The writer sets out details of her parents upbringing and early adulthood having grown up in Luebeck, North Germany where they knew each other as children. Georg joined the Hamburg police force, later refusing to join the Nazi party and so was thrown out of the police. He joined the Czech resistance movement against Hitler and as part of his activities went to Prague, receiving warning not to return to Germany. Repercussions followed including imprisonment of family members in Germany. Kaethe did manage to join Georg in Czechoslovakia and the couple made plans to emigrate to Brazil. Plans changed when in February 1939 they obtained visas to travel to Britain, leaving in early March ten days before Hitler's troops invaded Prague.

After living in Hertfordshire both were interned, George form March 1940 (Brixton prison, Lingfield Racecourse then Toronto Camp R,Canada) and Kaethe from May 1940 (Rushen Camp, Isle of Man). Here Kathe made a firm friend in Edith Levy.

The circumstances of their release and reuniting in Liverpool are recounted as well as life after the war for their family and that of Edith Levy.
