Date(s): 1820

Creator(s): Customs Commissioners

Scope & Content: Comprise appointment of Thomas Moore to be a Landing Waiter and Gauger (Customs) in the port of Douglas, Isle of Man with power to seize vessels and goods liable to forfeiture and seizure (dated 6 May 1820). Accompanied by an 1818 printed pamphlet 'Instructions for the Landing-Waiters of His Majesty's Customs in the Out-Ports' (London 1818) inscribed to Moore on an inside page and signed by the Commissioners at Custom House, London on 6 May 1820. The pamphlet includes rules about linen and is sewn in with an additional pamphlet 'Rules to be observed by the Officers of the Customs in examining and delivering of linen from foreign parts, agreeable to law, and the practice of the Port of London (London, 1818).

A franked, annotated envelope dated 1939 in which these were found is also present. Said envelope is addressed to J D Clucas JP CP, Athol Street, Douglas. It is likely the manuscripts were at one time in the possession of J D Clucas and were probably passed to him.
