The 'Ben Rein'

Scope & Content: This photograph is from a collection of shipping and wreck photographs amassed by Captain Thomas Henry Corteen (Tom Corteen) between the 1930s and 1970s.
The 'Ben Rein' was built in 1905 as the 'Starling'. She was shelled and sunk by a German submarine 40 miles North North West 'Bar Light Ship' on passage from Liverpool to Belfast with a cargo of soap. The seven man crew landed at Whitehaven in the ship's lifeboat. John Cowley of Port St Mary was the Master and Harry Corteen of Douglas (Tom Corteen's father) was the Chief Engineer.
