Sailmaker at Work, Isle of Man

Scope & Content: Mr Clucas the sailmaker in his workshop in Port St Mary. Modernisation has crept in for a single light bulb hangs from the collar beam of the roof truss. On the wall are printed almanacs from the local newspapers as well as a ship painting on a calendar and ropes, weights, floats etc. The chair by the window is probably constructed out of drift wood. A reconstruction of a sail maker’s loft is to be found at the Nautical Museum in Castletown. Mr Clucas manufactured sails chiefly for local boats.
