Armchairs belonging to the Kermode family of Claughbane, Isle of Man

Date(s): c.1930

Creator(s): Kermode, Philip Moore Callow

Scope & Content: The chairs are lined up outside the ancient farmhouse at Claughbane, Maughold. The chair on the left is a jointed chair which bears the inscription 'MC 1685'. The chair in the centre also bears an inscription although this is not apparent in the picture. ‘J.C. 19 March 1723’. This could well be carved to commemorate the birth of a child who was to receive the chair. Both these chairs are now in the Furniture Collection of the Manx Museum.

The remaining chair is also a jointed armchair and of probable 18th century origin.
