Santon Tea Rooms, Isle of Man
Date(s): 1930s
Creator(s): unknown photographer
Scope & Content: The sign above the door is ‘Harbour Road Tea Gardens’ and indeed it is. The location is the top end of Harbour Road, Port Grenaugh where it meets the Old Castletown Road. The building was built as a timber frame, the rear walls and roof were covered with corrugated iron sheeting. The front and sides were boarded and then branches were nailed to the boarding; this is known as cottage orné and was used a lot on buildings owned by the electric railway from Douglas to Ramsey. Notice how well the branches fit together. At Glen Roy the refreshment building there had branches that formed geometric patterns on the sides of the building. At the back of the cafe tables and chairs were set out on the lawn beneath the trees.
