Plan of unbuilt bridge showing Douglas Head suspension bridge and tower from outer harbour
Date(s): n.d.
Place made: Douglas Head
Scope & Content: At one time there were plans to construct a Manx version of the Eiffel tower on Douglas Harbour. The venture was an effort by the ‘Standard Contract and Debenture Corporation’ to improve access from Douglas town to Douglas Head, a popular tourist resort by the mid-1880s. The first idea was to build a tunnel or subway under Douglas harbour, proposed by civil engineer Daniel Cregeen in 1886. This idea was superseded by proposals to build a suspension bridge at the ‘Double Corner’ near the present swing bridge, including an 'Eiffel' inspired tower, designed by civil engineer T. Floyd. An office of the ‘Douglas Head Suspension Bridge’ was set up at 14 Victoria Street in 1889. They even laid a foundation stone in 1890. However, the project itself never got off the ground, due to ongoing ‘legal skirmishes’ and company debts.
