Captain Moughtin

Administration / Biographical History: Captain Robert Moughtin was something of an anomaly. He was a former ship's captain who sat in the House of Keys for the working class constituency of South Douglas. In spite of his background and the nature of his supporters, he held strong Tory views. When in 1918 a General Strike was called by the Workers' Union in protest at the removal of a bread subsidy, Moughtin opened his coal yard on South Quay in defiance of the strikers. Only the timely intervention of the Douglas police prevented the strikers from dunking Moughtin in the harbour.
