First free public library, Douglas
Date(s): 1932-1934
Creator(s): Frowde, John James
Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'The long building has played many parts. Early on, it was the Independent Chapel. Much later, in the eighties, it was the first Free Public Library, with Mr J. de Maine Browne in charge. Well remember him. My ticket was numbered 192, and I was one of his most exacting clients; and would go to no end of trouble to assist the young enquirer. Early on, Tommy the Toad (?) found the Free Library very handy for an afternoon snooze, but J de M. Browne soon vetoed that indulgence'.
