Louis Ebert, Internee, Isle of Man
Date(s): 1914-1918
Scope & Content: Ludwig (Louis) Ebert was born in Baden-Wurttemburg, Germany, in 1861. Like many other German nationals in this era he emigrated in order to avoid being conscripted into the Prussian army. In 1885 he was living in Sheffield, and later settled in Manchester where he made a living as a butcher. With the outbreak of the First World War, Ludwig was interned on the Isle of Man, but his son George Louis served in the British army. After the war, Ludwig returned to Manchester but retained an affection for the Isle of Man and brought his family back on holiday in the 1920s.
