This presentation took place at the end of the 1978 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) meeting, at the Castle Mona Hotel. The four top riders: Mick Grant, Mike Hailwood, John Williams and Phil Read were each presented with a silver salver by Dunlop in recognition of their services to the tyre brand. One of the salvers can be seen propped against the railings on the right hand side.
Racing at the TT plays an important role in tyre development, which feeds through to road tyres available to ordinary motorcyclists. Racing wins are also good sales and marketing publicity for tyre manufacturers.
1978 was Mike Hailwood's comeback year, in which he won the Formula One TT. Mick Grant, regarded as one of the greatest riders of the 1970s won the 1978 Classic TT with Phil Read in fourth place.
