Crowded Strand Street, Douglas bedecked with bunting and flags

Date(s): 1902

Creator(s): Cavanagh, William G.

Scope & Content: The occasion may have been either the end of the Boer War (which ended 31 May 1902 and was celebrated in early June) or the coronation of Edward VII (9 August 1902).

For the former, thousands of people celebrated the peace in the streets of Douglas and rockets were fired from Victoria Pier. There were flags and bunting everywhere, schools were closed for the day, and workmen were given a half-day off.

Caley and Gawne Ironmongers in view (listed in Bent's Business Directory for 1907); also an advert for Singer sewing machines..
