Scope & Content: Married couple June Hope and Albert ('Bert') Hope talk to John Beckerson about running a boarding house in the Isle of Man. They talk about June’s memories of her parents' boarding house and her having to frequently vacate her bed for a guest; she describes how the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) races fortnight meant evenings spent preparing packed lunches for spectators; Demesne Road, Peel Road and Circular Road taking guests; not having holidays and money invested in the business; a typical day at the boarding house.
They continue by talking about some boarding houses not taking sporting parties such as cyclists; how they met during the Isle of Man cycling week; living in Manchester after they were marriage; by 1954 people going abroad and needing to update the boarding house; employing staff; building a bar in 1980; advertising in the Guide and in the Irish newspapers; all-inclusive rates; selling the guest house; lack of privacy; making friends and offering enjoyable holidays.
