Description: In this race Mick Grant broke Mike Hailwood’s outright lap record set in 1967. Hailwood was in the press box with his friend Ted Macaulay during the race. When he heard the news that Grant had broken his eight year old record, Hailwood is reported to have muttered, “The bastard!”
Grant for his part took this as a compliment, revering Hailwood as a demi-god, and has written that of his many accolades, this is the one of which he is most proud!
