Early Manx Fishing Craft

Publication date : 1941

Author or editor: Megaw, Basil

Notes: Many writers have described the Manx Dandies & eprinted from The Mariner's Mirror (The Quarterly Journal of the Society for Nautical Reaseach) 1941. Nickies of the last century, but their precursors in the Manx herring fishery have received scant attention.Unfortunately the early chronicles tell us little about the boats which made up the Manx fleets of the Middle Ages. The first reference to the Herring Scowte and the Fising Boat appear in a section of the Manx Statue Book copied in 1577 from a book of the Spiritual Lawes & Customs. etc. including pictures of of Manx Scowte,1760 & Manx Baulk Yawl, 1840. In Maritime scrapbook.
