Description: Esther Taubman nee Christian (1712-1802) painted in 1786 by leading London portrait artist George Romney (1734-1802). She was the widow of John Taubman who was a member of the House of Keys, and daughter of Deemster Nicholas Christian of Ballastole, Maughold. Both the Taubman and Christian families were prominent and powerful 18th century Manx families. The marriage of Esther to John would have served to strengthen the influence and power of both families. Esther Taubman lived at the Nunnery mansion on the outskirts of Douglas.
