Violin
Date made: late 19th-early 20th century
Description: This violin is made of maple with a spruce top, and has fittings of ebony and boxwood. It has an unusual double band of purfling, giving this musical instrument an ornate appearance. The violin was played by the donor's uncle, Robert Corlett, a Sulby postman. There is a double row of purfling, decorating the violin. Purfling is a narrow decorative edge inlaid into the top plate and often the back plate of a stringed instrument. Purfling was originally made of laminated strips of wood, often contrasting in color as a visual accent.
