Claghbane Sword

Date made: Viking: 800-1265

Description: The blade and hilt of a Peterson type L sword, in a scabbard. The blade had been bent to a right angle prior to burial. The lower guard is crescentic, pointed oval in plan and curves downwards. The upper guard is the same, but curves upwards. The pommel is three-lobed. Organic remains on the blade indicated a woven woollen fabric in the scabbard.

X-ray showed that the balde had been made using the pattern-welding process.

Found with bead, spearhead and shield boss (1980-0399; 1980-0398b and 0398c).
