Trial or sample piece from a monumental mason's yard from a design by Archibald Knox

Date made: early 20th century

Description: A trial or sample piece from the yard of Thomas Quayle, stonemason of Douglas, Isle of Man. The inscription is thought to be from a design by Archibald Knox. Knox executed many designs for gravestones and memorials on the Isle of Man. This was part of a sample for a proposed memorial plaque in the Manx Museum to John Miller Nicholson. In the end the trustees opted for a silver plaque which is held in the Museum collection.
