Originally named Glen Rhenass, Glen Helen was developed in the 1860s by a consortium of Manx businessmen, who planted trees and shrubs, built bridges and paths and opened the site to the public in 1867. Entrance cost four pence and vistors could enjoy croquet, skittles, swings and views of the waterfall (Rhenass). There were aviaries, a monkey house and seals in the river. Dances were held in the evenings.
John Miller Nicholson (1840-1913) is considered by many as the Island's greatest painter.
