Douglas Bay with Fishing Fleet

Date made: c.1870

Artist: unknown artist

Description: Showing the Herring Fishing Fleet in Douglas Bay. In the background an Isle of Man Steam Packet vessel is making its way to the Red Pier, which is crowded with people.

The Tower of Refuge can be seen to the left, in front of a sunny, rolling hillside. To the right of the painting, it looks as if there are dark clouds looming - perhaps why the ships and boats were so eager to come and dock in Douglas Bay, to avoid getting caught in the tumultuous waves of the Irish Sea.
