Ramsey Beach pewter plate

Date made: 17th century

Maker: unknown

Description: This pewter plate was one of thirty two items, dating to the mid-1600s, found under the surface of Ramsey Beach. It was found with a collection of musket balls and metalworking waste, indicating that it was destined to be melted down to make ammunition.

The effects of the Civil War in Britain during the 1660s did not only affect England, but also the Isle of Man. The Lord of Mann at the time, James Stanley, was a dedicated Royalist, eventually being beheaded for his allegiance. On the Island itself, preparations were being made for invasion or war.

Peel Castle and Castle Rushen were expanded and a new fort at Kerroogarroo was also built, in case it was needed. Even the possessions of ordinary people, such as their pewter plates, were requisitioned to help the war effort.
