Rechabite stamp
Description: Stamps
2]. Turned and polished wooden handle with a circular steel stamp. Engraved around edge '6 District Isle of Man', 'IOR' in centre with a shield and the sacred heart. Both appear to be early stamps for the society.
The Independent Order of Rechabites was formed in Salford on the 25th August, 1835; Eleven months later, a 'Tent' was opened in the Isle of Man.
The organisation promoted temperance (abstinence from alcohol). The movement gradually transformed into a financial institution which still exists, and still promotes abstinence. A branch may be known as a 'Tent', since the biblical Rechabites lived exclusively in tents.
