Rechabite Masonic Stamp
Description: Stamps.
3]. Turned varnished wooden handle and circular metal plus rubber disc 'Independent Order of Rechabites S.U.' (Scripture Union?) around edge, Isle of Man District No.6 and 3 legs symbol in centre.
The Independent Order of Rechabites was formed in Salford on the 25th August, 1835; Eleven months later, a 'Tent' was opened in the Isle of Man.
The organisation promoted temperance (abstinence from alcohol). The movement gradually transformed into a financial institution which still exists, and still promotes abstinence. A branch may be known as a 'Tent', since the biblical Rechabites lived exclusively in tents.
