Knock e Dhooney Boat Burial Artefacts

Date made: Viking

Description: Around AD 900-950, a dead Viking was wrapped in a cloak and laid to rest in his 9m long boat, surrounded by items he might need in the next life. A mound was rasied above his grave, 16 metres in diameter and over 2 metres high.

All that remained of the boat was about 300 iron rivets, most having decayed wood attached to them. Nothing remained of the Viking himself, only his grave goods survived. A sword, spear, shield, fishing equipment and smith's hammer and tongs were all buried with him, along with his companions, a horse and a dog.

The site was excavated by Philip Kermode, first curator of the Manx Museum, in 1927.
