Fisherman's Meilley Bowl for butter
Date made: early 19th century
Description: Fisherman's wooden butter-bowl, Meilley-beg, with inscription cut on top of cover J. M. K Christ 1805. The rim of the cover, which had broken, has been artfully repaired with ash band neatly dowelled all round, after the style of the binding of the cheese press 1954-5158. This belonged to John Moore of Lezayre, one of the Dhowin family, who used to take his week's supply of butter in it when he walked from Ramsey-way to Peel for the fishing, starting early on Monday. His provisions were (like the other men's) carried in a bag over his shoulder.
