Date made: early 20th century
Description: Paper-knife, made during 1914-1918 war, from shell-case. With carving of Reims Cathedral and REIMS scraped on the blade.
Known as trench art, items such as this were long believed to have been made by off duty soldiers. However there is strong evidence to suggest that they were made by French & Belgian civilians to sell as souvenirs.
