Tide-Mill at Birdham, Sussex

Date made: c.1900-1933

Artist: Knox, Archibald

Description: A relatively stark watercolour by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) of the Tide-Mill at Birdham, Sussex . Unlike most of his watercolour sketches which are untitled and unidentified views of the Manx and English landscape, Knox identified this as 'Birdham'. The large and distinctive Birdham mill building dates from the 1760s and when it closed in 1935, it was the last tidal mill operating in Sussex. This view of Birdham mill shows the large tidal mill pond, whilst other views by Knox show the lock gates next to the mill.
