The Greek Captive: the Jealousy and Revenge of Semiramis

Date made: early 20th century

Artist: Taubman, Frank Mowbray

Description: Semiramis, the woman impaled in this sculpture by Frank Mowbray Taubman, was a Demi-goddess and mythological ruler of Assyria, Queen of Babylon. She was famed for living a vicious and war faring life, and executed all her sons, except the youngest Ninyas. After one final battle she was forced to flee her empire, but was caught and killed by the one son she had spared, Ninyas. Here Taubman has brought that moment to life.

Of Manx parentage Frank Mowbray Taubman was a sculptor, medallist, and painter, born in London, 1868. The artist first exhibited his work in 1894, and predominantly produced sculptural work, often with themes in Ancient Greek Myth and portraiture. This sculpture was widely exhibited during Taubman’s life time, including at the Royal Academy in 1925, and in Venice.
