John Nicholson was the grandson of the noted Manx artist John Miller Nicholson and inherited his grandfather's artistic abilities. He became an accomplished painter in watercolours, oils and pastels. He could paint a sea or landscape, frame it and display it for sale all in the same day! He signed himself 'John H. Nicholson' to avoid confusion. The 'H' stood for Hobson, his mother's maiden name - thus his family nickname of 'Hobs'
