Roof Beam Samples of Oak

Description: Two samples of oak from a tie beam of the roof of the Friary Chapel, Ballabeg Arbory. Removed during repairs. February 1952.

These would probably be medieval in date (11th century?).

The Franciscan friary at Bemaken was the only Franciscan church on the Isle of Man and was home to a small community of 12 friars from Ireland. Built around 1373 and dedicated to St Francis, the friary was dissolved under King Henry VIII. The chapel remains, but is in use as a barn.
