Peel Castle from the Inner Harbour

Date made: 13 September 1815

Description: “We took up our quarters in Peel at Mr Grant’s house situated on the quay, the only Inn here, and to say nothing of wanting bread we met with worse accommodation than in any other part of the Island.” (Samuel Dukinfield Swarbreck, Tour through the Isle of Man by Captain William Latham, July 1815, M 07398)

On the sketch is written "Sketch of part of Peel Castle, Isle of Man. Taken from the River Neb which here discharges itself into the sea. These mouldering Towers form beautiful ruins pleasing the eye even in the midst of desolation. Will Latham, 13 September 1815."

Sketch by Captain William Latham of Liverpool. In July 1815 Captain William Latham made a tour of the Isle of Man with Mr William Gerard Walmesley Esq of Liverpool, Mr James Leigh of Liverpool and Mr Ralph Greenough of Wigan. Latham made many sketches of the Island during his visit.
