Gates of the Castle Mona

Date made: c.1815

Description: “In the bay of Douglas, the Duke of Athol has formed his garden of Castle Mona. It is a remarkable spot, and displays traces of much taste and skill in the planning of its walks and disposal of its trees, shrubberies, hothouses, parterres and vegetable plots; but, since the interruption of his Grace’s regular visits to the Island, it has been almost wholly neglected.” (William Bennet, Sketches of the Isle of Man By A Tourist, 1829, M 02608)

On the sketch is written: "Entrance Gates, Castle Mona."

Sketch by Captain William Latham of Liverpool. In July 1815 Captain William Latham made a tour of the Isle of Man with Mr William Gerard Walmesley Esq of Liverpool, Mr James Leigh of Liverpool and Mr Ralph Greenough of Wigan. Latham made many sketches of the Island during his visit.
