Douglas from the Head
Date made: c.1865
Artist: unknown artist
Description: The artist has captured Douglas just at the town is about to experience a massive building boom. The striking painting looking towards Douglas Bay from Douglas Head shows a town that is beginning to grow, in another twenty years hundreds of hotels were to be built on newly constructed promenades with massive entertainment complexes to entertain the mass influx of tourists. In this scene genteel holidaymakers can be seen ‘taking a turn’ on Douglas Head, whilst the Isle of Man Steam Packet ships sit alongside the Red Pier. The artist has probably used a camera obscurer to help with the composition, prior to the invention of photography, and this might explain the unusual perspective. This work has been painted on glass which makes it one of the most unusual and fragile pieces in our collection.
